West Alton Indoor Play: Bird Watching & Discovery at the Audubon Center

Welcome to Day 16 of 21 Days of Indoor Play! Today we are headed to the confluence of the rivers to a place that feels like a quiet retreat from the city hustle. The Audubon Center at Riverlands is a premier destination for nature lovers, but it is also an incredible (and free!) indoor resource for families.

If you are a fan of Powder Valley Nature Center, you will feel right at home here. While Powder Valley focuses on the forest, Riverlands is all about the "Mississippi Flyway" and the amazing birds that call our riverbanks home.

Winter Magic: Bald Eagles & Swans

One of the coolest things about this center is that you can experience the best of Missouri winter without the frostbite.
  • Heated Viewing: The center features massive glass windows overlooking the sanctuary. During the winter months, hundreds of Bald Eagles and Trumpeter Swans gather here.
  • High-Powered Scopes: They have professional-grade spotting scopes set up inside for everyone to use. My kids think it is so cool to see an eagle's nest up close while staying nice and warm!

The Children's Discovery Corner

When you need a break from the windows, head over to the dedicated kids' area. It’s a intentionally designed space that encourages "slow play" and literacy:
  • The Library: A great collection of bird and nature-themed books for all ages.
  • Creative Stations: They always have fresh coloring sheets and nature puzzles available.
  • Discovery Backpacks: This is my favorite feature!  You can check out Adventure and Discovery Backpacks at the front desk! They are filled with tools and activities to help your kids engage with the exhibits in a hands-on way.

Storybook Walk: If the sun comes out, they often have a Storybook Walk on the paved trails right outside the center. It’s a great way to transition from indoor play to a little fresh air.
