Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House| Indoor Things to Do in St. Louis with Kids

Welcome to Day 10 of 21 Days of Indoor Play! If you’re craving a 20°C jump in temperature without leaving St. Louis, today’s destination is for you. We are heading to the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Faust Park.

As a mom of three, I love this spot because it’s a total sensory reset. Whether it’s a rainy spring day or a freezing winter morning, stepping into that 85°F (approx. 29°C) conservatory feels like an instant vacation. Plus, with their rotating events like Morpho Mania, there is always something new to spot!

Why My Kids Love the Exhibit Hall

While everyone comes for the butterflies, don't sleep on the Exhibit Hall right when you walk in!

  • The "Reading Cocoon": This is my youngest's favorite spot. It’s a cozy, immersive reading nook filled with bug-themed books—perfect for a quiet moment.
  • The Cockroach Dome: I’ll be honest, this one is a bit "ew" for me, but my boys think it is the coolest thing ever. They can crawl into a clear dome and get a "bug’s eye view" of giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches!
  • Live Invertebrates: They have a whole wall of exotic bugs and spiders (behind glass, don't worry!) that are fascinating to look at.

Tropical Magic in the Conservatory

Once you pass through the double doors, you’re in a lush tropical paradise.
  • Butterfly Spotting: We love to play "I Spy" to see who can find a Blue Morpho or a giant Owl Butterfly first.
  • The Miracle of Metamorphosis: You can stand right at the viewing window and see butterflies emerging from their chrysalises in real-time. It’s an amazing science lesson for the older kids.
  • The Waterfall: My kids are always drawn to the water and the little pool area—it’s just such a peaceful, beautiful space.

Current Event: Morpho Mania!

If you visit during March, you’re in for a treat with Morpho Mania. The conservatory is filled with thousands of bright blue Morpho butterflies, and they even have special "Bonus Mondays" in March so you can visit when the museum is typically closed!
