Just an hour north of Kansas City is the start of the Pony Express, which would typically be a homeschool field trip, but that's not why I think St. Joesph, Missouri needs to be a destination for your next day trip. We just spent the day at InspireU: The Children’s Discovery Center, and I am still blown away by how much heart went into this space. This isn’t just another indoor playground! Mosaic Life Care Foundation created a state-of-the-art hub dedicated to physical health, mental wellness, and educational enrichment.
Three Floors of Wonder (And a Rooftop!)
The first thing that hit me was how HUGE and clean the entire facility is. With three full floors plus a rooftop play area, there is so much room for the kids to explore without feeling crowded. My favorite part? The "hometown" feel. The museum is packed with sweet nods to the businesses and towns of Northwest Missouri.
The First Floor Climber
One of the biggest showstoppers at InspireU is the giant two-story climber. It features three massive pods for exploration, all connected by crawlable tunnels and filled with interactive elements throughout.
As a mom, here is the feature I appreciated the most: The climber is a closed loop. Children who enter on the first floor can only exit back out on the first floor. It is such a relief to know your child won't accidentally "disappear" onto a different level of the museum while you're watching from below!
While the kids are busy navigating the tunnels, they can also head over to the Hillyard Basketball Court to shoot some hoops, a nod to the local St. Joseph history.
Mezzanine & Infant / Toddler Area
What really touched my heart, though, was the Mezzanine with ADA spaces to play with those in the climber from the first floor. The design is so intentional; it allows children in the climber to go up and actually interact with friends playing on the accessible mezzanine level. It’s a beautiful way to ensure that every child is part of the same play experience.
For those of us navigating the "baby and toddler years," the second floor is home to the Infant/Toddler Area. It is one of the most well-thought-out spaces I’ve ever seen! The whole area is shoe-free, which is such a relief when you have crawlers on the move! Whether you have a brand-new walker or a baby of different abilities, this space is inclusive, beautiful, and so intentional.
Tiny Town
My middle man LOVES tools and the Gray Manufacturing Engineering Space was his dream! You can actually move a semi-truck up and down on real lifts! It’s such a clever way to explore the five simple machines. My oldest spent a lot of time at the ball wall, using different parts to navigate a maze.
They really did design this with families in mind. There is a baby play area on the main floor! It is a lifesaver for those of us with a "mixed-age" crew. I could sit with the baby while still keeping a clear eye on the older kids.
The Ambulance & Medical Center: A wonderful way to play "doctor" with a realistic ambulance—it's such a cool way to introduce kids to community helpers! You can care for babies in pediatrics or even look at cells in pathology!
Altec & Lehr Construction: If you have tool lovers, they will love this area, too. They can climb through a house under construction to reach an Altec truck bucket and even use a radio to talk to fellow "linemen" below.
Camping Area was a brand-new experience for us. I love when we see things we have never seen in a children's museum! We loved paddling the kayak and crawling through the tent into a quiet, starlit night. There’s even campfire karaoke!
The Missouri American Water Table was AMAZING! It’s modeled after the Missouri River, all the way from Montana to the Mississippi. You can build your own boat to send down the ramp or use the locks and dams to change the water flow. My oldest especially loved the little "fish-eye" dome you can crawl under to see the water from a totally different perspective! For the younger ones, they have little seats to sit and splash in the water.
The Rooftop: Play with a View
If it's nice outside, make sure you head all the rooftop! There's a massive steamboat and in the summer there are outdoor games, too.
