One of my favorite books so far this year!
While reading "Let Them Be Kids", I added this book to my list. I really appreciated that it is backed by actual data, other published works, interviews and personal stories. I believe the copious amount of data from studies gives it much more validity than "it's what we did as kids" line used in Let Them Be Kids.
This book has so many practical ways we can actually get outside and nurture a love for nature. I loved at the end of the chapter she helps us breaks it down into bite size pieces that we can try - especially the "how to hike with kids" one, as this seems completely daunting to me.
About 2 chapters into this book, I had an 'aha' moment that maybe I didn't hate the winter or rain, but maybe I was never dressed appropriately for them. Sure enough, on this day it was cold and raining, but I really wanted to give her "no such thing as bad weather" a go. I gathered up extra layers like she recommends, bundled myself and Rhett up. We put on our rain boots and rain jackets and headed outside. I set a timer for 15 minutes. We made it 13 before there were tears.
The next day, we did it again, although it was a little warmer, so we skipped the multiple layers. We made it 20 minutes of backyard playing, then we took a walk totaling almost 40 minutes outside. The next day, we were excited to get outside and play. We managed to get at least an hour in almost every day that I read this book and I'm really excited to see how this habit continues!
