Momma's Chocolate Chip Cookies

When I was in fourth grade I had this friend, Heather. We had this brilliant idea to make and sell dozens of chocolate chip cookies for a little fun money to spend throughout the summer.

We went around the neighborhood with our clipboards looking real official and asked our neighbors to buy cookies. Let's just pause and thank God for my good neighbors. The families in my cul de sac literally always bought whatever I was selling. They were some amazing, supportive people.

When we got back to my house we had quite a few orders. More than I think my mom thought we would have. But, my mom was the real MVP. She completely supported this idea, gave us some good tips starting out, taught us the math to double the recipe, took us to the grocery store... a few times, and then helped us make these cookies because tbh, neither of us had actually made cookies from scratch before.

The next day, Heather came over with her family's "top secret" chocolate chip recipe. My mom looked at it and started laughing, then pulled out a binder with a chocolate chip cookie recipe she got when she was in high school. It was the exact same recipe, and very similar to the nesele toulose recipe. (Remember that episode on Friend's with Pheobe's great great grandmother's chocolate chip recipe? haha)

The first time we took orders, we each profited a few bucks. By the middle of the summer, I had made enough money to pay for my entire trip to Junior Camp. To say the least, our little chocolate chip cookies were a huge success.

Today, I have this recipe memorized and rarely look at it when I throw a batch together. It's a family favorite and I can usually bribe my dad for help when I have a plate of these cookies nearby.

Momma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 stick of melted butter
2/3 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar
1 brown sugar
1 t vanilla
2 eggs
1 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
3 cups flour
1 bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Using a stand mixer or electric beaters, beat the butter, shortening, and sugars until creamy. Add the vanilla and the eggs. Use a wooden spoon and add flour, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips.

Scoop cookie dough balls and place on a cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees until the cookies are golden brown.

Often times, I make a batch of these, bake a dozen and put the other two dozens in the freezer for another time. They freeze wonderfully and are a great snack when you're jonesing for a hot cookie!
